rory: being a past owner of a civic there are a few things that might be wrong You could have a leak in the air induction system, a clogged fuel injector, clogged fuel filter, bad Mass Air Flow sensor, low fuel pressure, a leak in the exhaust system, a vacuum leak, a bad O2 sensor or a cracked PCV hose.
its pretty much endless but my problem was bad MAF sensor and one of my electronics was being chewed through by my timing belt it was pretty bad almost ate all the way through lol

I took my car to a local mechanic and he told me the bottom alternator through bolt had fallen out and hit my catalytic converter on it's way down to the pavement. So, he told me the tap is because something broke loose in my catalytic converter and the squeal is my alternator belt. While the car was on the lift, he showed me where the missing bolt was suppose to be, and how the alternator was pressed against the engine.
The car seems to be trying to decide whether or not to stall out when I am at stop signs/lights and when I give it too much gas. After driving the car for an extended amount of time, every time I slow down from highway speed, or I stop at a stop sign or a red light, it will want to stall. When I go to accelerate, it will stall out. After restarting, I have to rev the car in neutral and while holding the accelerator down I have to neutral bang it to get it to go.
Edit: I replaced the alternator bolt a few days before taking it into the shop since the bogging and stall was getting worse even with the new bolt in the alternator

Meh I was making a right turn right by Pasadena City College and stepped on it a little bit and saw there was a motorcycle cop coming behind me. At first I was like "maybe he didn't hear me" lol yeah right. He pulled me over and asked if I put anything on the car I said "no officer I think I have a leak or something because it sounds very 'blegh' and loud." So he just gave me a fix it ticket.
Only 15 minutes before I was trailed by a police car with his windows down who probably smelled me, I wouldn't be surprised if he put a call out to all the cops in the area...
He was actually pretty nice and didn't hassle me. He probably secretly liked my car heheh

Lol cops want our cars. But that's good that you didn't get hassled. I've been pulled over bunch of times but never once metioned about the smell. *knock on wood*
