It IS required in CA to have a front plate. However, I did not have mine on for 12 years and only got one ticket a year ago (with the RX-8) when I got a parking ticket as well. Cop was a busybee and gave me the front plate ticket too. I paid the $25 since it's worth for not having the ugly plate on the car.

Coming up very soon (I believe at the beginning of the year) it will be a law in CA that you must have your headlights on if you are using your windshield wipers. CHP will probably be coming down hard on people when this law becomes active. I haven't personally read this law, but I work as a paramedic and there has been many memos to start turning the headlights on whenever using the windshield wipers.

The front license plate law is garbage because it is clearly SELECTIVELY enforced. I received my first ticket for not having a front license plate yesterday outside of my workplace... On the street that I was parked on (and the two adjacent streets) there were at least 18 other cars I spotted with no front plates. Not one other car received a ticket (even my coworkers). The difference? Mine was the only "rice-rocket," the other cars were BMWs, Mercedes, Camry, SUVs, a couple of more expensive cars like an Aston Martin, etc.
Its bullshit that enforcement will single out people, because of course since I drive a souped-up import car I'm a street racing criminal, obviously. All I ask is that if the law is going to be enforced, it has to be enforced for EVERYBODY.
Another case in point, my father used to own an old jaguar with no front plate and I had a modified Integra with no front as well (though I put it in the windshield which I found out is also illegal). In the 11 years he owned this car he never once received a ticket for the front. In 1 year I received 4 tickets before I finally gave up and put it on.
Pure bullshit.

I don't have a problem with the driving laws they pass, but I have a problem with how it is enforced. The keyword there is "own judgement," that is pretty much what it takes for a Cop to target you and not the RWG driving the Mercedes. If you ask why, they'll just say "Ever went fishing?"
In their defense, however, I have seen a Cop writing no front plate tickets to all qualified cars in a Church parking lot. I guess it was a slow day for him.
