Turbocharging my car ...

I finally bit the bullet, its not like I wasn't satisifed w/ the RX8 I had already.

Here's the purchased list:

Greddy Turbo Kit
HKS F-Con V-pro v3.2
550cc Injectors

Pretty much, I'm selling the Greddy Intake and Emanage upon arrival once my car is at the HKS tuner shop.

Greddy is on Backorder .. F-Con and Injectors are already here. I will send my car to Blast engineering when the kit arrives. I'm going to let them know about some of the issues that I read on the boards concerning heat and what not. I'll see if anything custom beyond that will cost me.

Well, I won't see the rx8 anytime soon once its there.

later for now!

Why didn't you go w/ the SSR Turbo? Other than cost...

Well, I got hooked up w/ the injectors and the V-pro. Since the SSR turbo is sold as a kit alone, meaning, I can't just buy the piping, I figured that I could save money by getting the Greddy and sell the emanage/intake more easily as well.

I'm hoping to get more HP out of the Greddy turbo using the Vpro and bigger njectors w/ no heat problems and maintaining the same reliability than a standard Greddy install.

What are you going to be using for the intake ? The stock intake does not work with the kit. The intake for the turbo kit comes from below vs. the stock intake where the air goes right into the engine.

that's good to know, I currently ahve the HKS RS kit, which does use the box style enclosure. If i have to get rid of the box then I'll keep the HKS sponge and sell the greddy one. If I have to get rid of the entire HKS setup, i'll probably have to sell the racing suction kit.

You won't be able to use the HKS RS setup. Here is a picture of my setup :

As you can see the air intake goes down into the Greddy turbo through the IC & back up into the throttle body/engine. Also, you should get a Greddy Type RS BOV or HKS SSV BOV as that is not included with the kit.

thanks fanman for the clarification. I guess you're right, I am going to have to get rid of the hks rs.

as for BOV's, you're probably right, I'll probably stick w/ HKS.

[edit]

Fanman, seeing that you have the greddy, how are you liking it so far? i guess to keep it short, out of 5 stars, 1 being "I shouldn't have gotten it" to 5 "it exceeds all my expectations" -- what would you give the greddy kit?

3, only because the tuning on this kit is shitty. There is a noticeable bog right before boost, & I have the backfires because the stock turbo map is so rich (kind've annoying). I bought the software so hopefully we can play with the map after I turn up the boost & hopefully it will be better.

Also the kit was missing a pipe, so I called greddy & they wanted me to go through my seller, who would go through his Greddy distributor..blah, blah, blah. In other words I would have never gotten satisfaction from them for their screw up, so i just had my mechanic fab up a piece of piping for me. I like the extra power though, but this kit was rushed to market, you can definitely see the corners that were cut. The quality of the product (materials) was very good but the electronics & the assembly (all the parts in the box) left a little to be desired.

Getting the kit will take the longest time -- about 3 weeks. Then its a matter of driving down to LA and squeezing my car into blast. In all, depending how well Blast likes the fab job done by greddy, 2 weeks at the shop. Tuning and the Greddy verification process is what I'm not sure of. Blast told me that 1 week will go to tuning, both street tuning and dyno tuning. I hope the kit is up to par w/ these guys at blast -- if not, I'm thinking anytime between 5-10 weeks total.

The plan is, if the renesis and tuning is perfect, I'm gonna get rid of that Greddy turbo and get something BIG and retune the 8 again

Dude...backseat, trunk, straped to the roof, as long as I'm there. But seriously, sounds like some good stuff Alex. I can wait. Not like I know anyone else getting their 8 force fed. What kind of turbo are you thinking about upgrading it to? Keep us all updated!

FYI, Blast Racing is a well respected tuner shop in Japan and now in the U.S. In fact, one of their top mechanics was trained at HKS USA and has experience tuning the F-Con V-Pro!

HKS EVC KPA Ver.2 Electronic Boost Controller

Blast set my date for my car to be end of april. Kit doesn't come before then anyhow, so all is moving somewhat smoothly.

Yes, it comes with the turbo exhaust manifold, it is built out of cast iron so it is nice & tough.

I'm not sure of it all, the way Blast works is you send your car in there, parts optional, and you state what you want to do -- drift car, 500+whp car, tune the existing setup, etc. and they'll do it. No money up front, they call you when there is a price change (usually up) and when its done, you find out

All I know is, it could cost me up to $3000 for everything -- Greddy Turbo Kit Install, Injectors, HKS Vpro, HKS BOV and custom piping, HKS Turbo Timer, HKS Boost Controller and Car tuning on dyno and street. I'm not looking to save money because at Blast you pay for performance and reliability.

I'm stating to them to give me 300+whp or more and let me know what the car is really capable of w/out the stock computer.

So, after all this, I'll say, hardware, installation and fabrications, upwards of $7000 but w/ a better and safer tune with a local human being gaurantee, which can't be beat.
