jeff (mm), There are no pawn shops by my job and its down the street from the hard rock. I dont know how thats ghetto? I guess the hard rock, hyatt place and residence inn by marriott are ghetto too. I use to work at the hard rock. We use to kick bums out of there all the time.
The best western, embassy suites going to the convention center are right by what use to be budget suites of america and some apartments that are ghetto.

Across the street is Terribles with its giant, half-burned out neon.
You are catty-corner from a strip mall and a gas station that has ALWAYS had a guy selling dope lounging around the pay phone all night.
Its down the street from the Hard Rock, but it is also the same distance from McDonalds and some even lower-budget hotels than the Candlewood.
Don't even try to compare the Candlewood to the Hard Rock. Of course its in a shitty neighborhood - ALL OF VEGAS IS A SHITTY NEIGHBORHOOD! lol
You have to go to the upper reaches of Summerlin before it gets nice out there.
Or a gated community. Metropolitan Vegas - from 515 to 215 along the 15 for 6 miles or more east or west is just a giant miasma of commercial mismanagement. ALL of the casino hotels are in there, which is why they pad themselves with massive swaths of landscaping and driveway to keep out the riff-raff.
If you can get people $25 room rates and they want no-frills, that's great. For some people, that is all they want.
Any more that that a night and they can stay in a real hotel and for only slightly more than twice that they an stay in a world-class resort.
Hell, you can get a Classic room at the Rio for $46 a night COMPLETE.

Vegas is just another big city with it's decaying parts and upscale parts. It is hard to find another place with as many five star hotels and so many class rooms, restaurants and entertainment venues.
If Vegas was as bad as MM makes it out to be then why are there so many peeps that keep coming????? I do not wish to continue any argument or city bashing. I'll just let my town's name and reputation (be it good or bad) speak for itself.

The only other city to host gambling to the same degree is Atlantic City, NJ and that town is REALLY a dump, no-holds-barred.
Vegas exists to support its #1 industry and the exurbs that sprung up over the last decade (and then collapsed when the bubble burst) are a good example of why it can't go much beyond that.
The Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon are in AZ - a fact that always made me chuckle when promos for Vegas listed them as perks. Its kinda like the golf and outings to Red Rock.
Because of the legal gaming and the incredible cash flow it generates, Vegas has grown up to be the place to hold events like ours. Get in, get off and get out. It is an absolute blast!
Which is why I recommend that your hotel dollars are best spent in a place where you can take advantage of all the town has to offer.
But if your hotel is just a place to crash for a few hours and you don't mind driving drunk or taking cabs to where stuff is happening, the Candlewood is an acceptable choice.

I use to stay on the strip but could never get why on a sold out weekend I was paying over $300 bucks plus tax for a room at the Bellagio? all we did was get drunk off $10 dollar drinks blow money on the gaming and stumble back to our room. I guess I was just another statistic lol then again I stayed at a holiday inn by disneyland with a view of trailers for $109 a night.
Oh talk about clean citys I went to a few car shows in downtown la. Damn good think we had our 45 with us thats all I'm saying. Vegas is disneyland. I been to some bad parts that got nothing on la.

For the ones that want to stay off the strip: I just confirmed I can do coned off parking!
You will not lose your spot unless another 8 takes the spot lol
How it works: Cone in spot. Remove cone and park. Place cone behind car. When you leave the spot place a cone there so no one piston takes your spot.
Our back lot is now walled in by a 10' brick wall with tons of light and the security guard is a ex RX-8 owner. PM me for room info

Let me make some room suggestions here (so people don't get any "surprises" when booking a budget room):
Sunset Station has rooms for $49 a night. This is a pretty awesome hotel for that amount, though it is a bit off the beaten path.
There is a 24 hour bowling alley downstairs!
I've stayed there a bunch of times and its pretty nice.
Imperial Palace is a sh*t hole, but it is right in the middle of everything. $55.
South Point is brand new and pretty nice, but it is a few miles south of the strip. Really easy to get to and easy to get back to Vegas and the action. $60
Hooters is also a mega sh*t hole, but it is in a good location. $62
The Hilton is right next to the Convention Center and really close to the In-n-Out meet. $70. I would suggest this hotel as a best option. Old Vegas-style.
Excalibur has an awesome location and is attached to the Luxor, MGM, NY NY and Mandalay. Epicness. The rooms are cheesy, but it is only $74.
